FIH, the International Hockey Federation was established in 1924 as the Fédération Internationale de Hockey as the international governing organization for the sport of hockey (known as Field Hockey in the USA). Field Hockey in Special Olympics began its development in European programs, supported by a growing partnership with EuroHockey, the governing body of hockey in Europe. Field Hockey debuted on the Special Olympics World Games stage at the Berlin 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games, during which an historic memorandum of understanding was signed between Special Olympics and the International Hockey Federation. This MOU recognized a mutual commitment to developing the sport of field hockey within the Special Olympics movement and collaborating to provide more opportunities to promote, develop and celebrate the sport of field hockey for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
