Luis Torres is an athlete from Special Olympics Panamá in the Latin America Region. Luis participates in tennis. He has been involved in Special Olympics for 21 years.
Luis has represented Special Olympics Panamá by competing in tennis in several different countries including Ireland, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic.
Luis’s participation in Special Olympics is not limited to sports. In addition to being an athlete, he is also an athlete leader and is a part of the Athlete National Council. Being an athlete leader has allowed Luis the opportunity to participate in various events, activities, and meetings.
Special Olympics has helped Luis grow and develop himself in sports as well as improve his physical and cognitive skills. Special Olympics has also helped him to learn leadership skills which have been very helpful in his job at the Banco Nacional of Panamá.
Project Description
Luis’s grant plan is to grow the number of Athlete Leaders trained in the basic leadership and skills curriculum within Special Olympics. To do this Luis will continue to present the two modules on basic leadership skills to help athletes with their physical development though sport. This training will also strengthen the athletes’ leadership skills and help pave the way to a more inclusive community.
